Two hundred kilometres of salt pan and volcanic ridge with almost no water vapour above it. The Magellanic Clouds sit high enough to cast a visible glow on pale ground, and the galactic core rises nearly vertical between March and September. This is the reference standard every other site on Perigee is measured against.
