The Scandes create a rain shadow over Lake Torneträsk, so Abisko stays clear while the coast is buried in cloud — locals call it the blue hole. It sits directly beneath the auroral oval, which means even quiet geomagnetic nights produce something overhead. December through March the sky never fully brightens.
