During the thin-water season from January to March, a few centimetres of standing water turns the salt flat into the largest natural mirror on Earth — the sky appears above and below the horizon simultaneously. Outside that window the dry crust gives an absolutely flat 360° horizon at 3,660 m.

Standing in two centimetres of water with stars underneath your boots is genuinely disorienting. I lost my sense of up for a moment. The mirror window is short and Perigee timed it exactly right — the wind dropped on the second night and the water went completely still.
